Berta Cabaza Middle School principal Saul Ibarra explains how “San Benito Junior High” was renamed around 1974 to honor a longtime educator – Berta Cabaza. Mr. Ybarra states that because he and many staff members come from humble and low socio-economic class backgrounds, they are able to reassure their over 850 students that they, too, can overcome their struggles.

The band, choir, and athletics programs bring great pride to Greypup territory! Robotics and coding programs are available, and students can also earn high school credit in courses such as Spanish and Algebra. Technology-based initiatives include Epson projectors and the nearly “one to one” student to Chromebook initiative.
“We are a humble people,” says Ybarra, adding that Berta Cabaza Middle School is a family-oriented atmosphere. -

Miller Jordan Middle School principal Jo Ann Fernandez describes the school that opened its doors to about 300 students in 1956 as one that’s full of character and rich history. Today, there are a little over 850 students that proudly call themselves MJMS Cougars!

Among the many programs available are a jiujitsu class through the After School Program and an Adopt a Highway initiative through the Leadership Officer Training Corps (LOTC) program. Campus initiatives include an Academic Advisory (AA) period that encompasses a mentoring component and the Targeted Academic Grouping (TAG) that helps ensure that all students reach their maximum potential. Technologically, MJMS is a “one to one” campus, and Epson projectors and interactive whiteboards further facilitate learning in the classrooms. -

Early College Academy (ECA) administrator Amy Rodriguez-Lopez explains how the district’s “school within a school” is a dual enrollment partnership with Texas A&M University - Kingsville (TAMUK). Essentially, ECA students are both San Benito High School Greyhounds and TAMUK Javelinas!

The ECA offers high school students an opportunity to graduate having earned up to 41 college credit hours – an approximate savings of $14,000 in tuition! Taught by TAMUK professors, the courses currently offered are Art History, College Algebra, Communications, Psychology, and College Spanish. -
2019 Spelling Bee

The district’s traditional spelling competition provides elementary and middle school students with an opportunity to learn new words, sharpen their spelling and vocabulary skills, and vie for the title of the school district’s top speller.
