Luis D. Gonzales Jr.

Luis' Profile
As the Director of the Family and Community Engagement Department, Luis Gonzales contributes over twenty years of work experience at San Benito CISD. He is a product of San Benito Schools having attended Fred Booth Elementary, Miller Jordan Jr. High and is a proud 1983 graduate of San Benito High School. Luis attended college at Texas Southmost College, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He holds a bachelors degree in political science and English.

During his tenure at San Benito CISD, Luis was a site coordinator for the PHD After-School Program - a 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. With experience as an elementary and high school site coordinator, he was named Director of the Project GRAD 21st Century Grant. He remained as a grant administrator for the district's after-school program providing grant implementation and compliance monitoring through internal grant evaluation services. Additionally, he provided administrative guidance and supervision of the district's award winning chess program.

In 2007, Luis was assigned to the District Parental Involvement Department as a Department Coordinator. He managed the implementation of the Title I Parental Involvement requirements, family services for the Safe Schools Grant, and served as the McKinney Vento Homeless Act Liaison. After the retirement of longtime Parental Involvement Director Joe Villarreal, Luis was promoted to supervise all department services including Title I Part A Parental Involvement, Texas Compulsory Attendance and Truancy; and was designated as the District McKinney Vento Homeless and Foster Care Liaison and the District Student Disciplinary Hearing Officer. Under his leadership, the department has evolved by expanding its staff and its location, improved its scope of community services, and eventually transformed into its current identity as the Family and Community Engagement Department.

Luis' participation in the local community extends beyond SBCISD. He is currently a member of the United Way of Northern Cameron County Board of Directors and past president, a member of the City of San Benito Civil Service Commission, and a dedicated supporter and show announcer for the San Benito High School Mighty Greyhound Marching Band.

During the 2019-2020 school year, Luis' personal and professional goal is to create and open a SBCISD Community Closet that will house donated clothing, toiletries, housewares, and school supplies for students and families experiencing temporary economic hardships. The Community Closet services will be available to San Benito CISD students and families to assist them to be ready, prepared, and focused on daily academic instruction.
