Through the guidance curriculum, a school counselor guides students in developing their full educational potential and serves as a critical Tier I support for all students. This curriculum helps students develop competencies that align with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills appropriate for their developmental level. The guidance curriculum is delivered systematically by school counselors in collaboration with other professional educators. The curriculum includes K-12 student goals and competencies.

The Ripple Effects program is an evidence-based, trauma-informed digital suite designed to improve social-emotional learning (SEL) and behavior management in youth. It is commonly implemented in schools and juvenile justice settings.

Stop It- The San Benito CISD has enrolled with STOPit, the leading technology platform for schools that deters and controls harmful or inappropriate conduct. STOPit empowers students with an easy app to safely and anonymously report anything of concern to school officials – from cyberbullying to threats of violence or self-harm. All 4th – 12th grade students were introduced to the STOPit app through a presentation lead primarily by each school’s counselor(s). Through Individual Student Planning, a school counselor guides each student in planning, monitoring, and managing their educational, career, personal, and social development.  To achieve this, school counselors work with other educational professionals to implement systemic activities that guide students in creating future goals and plans.

Elementary School Counselors meet with administration, parents, and all stakeholders to make sure students are placed in the corrects school environment to succeed. Teachers and parents can meet over student goals and needs as needed or requested.

Middle School Counselors meet with all stake holders to plan for students, they meet with all the students in "minute meetings" to make sure students are aware of the supports they can receive in school.  

High School Counselors meet with all stake holders to plan with students their chosen career pathways to make sure their courses are aligned to their program of study.

High School Counselors utilize the TEA graduation toolkit.  The Texas Education Agency (TEA) Graduation Toolkit is an official academic planning resource designed to guide students through the Foundation High School Program. It breaks down credit requirements, endorsement options, and Distinguished Level of Achievement criteria needed to successfully graduate and transition to college or the workforce.

Through the responsive services component, school counselors intervene on behalf of any student whose immediate personal concerns or problems put the student's continued educational, career, personal, or social development at risk. This can include preventive, remedial, or crisis situations. Responsive services are implemented through individual or small-group counseling, as well as through crisis response. 

Senate Bill 12 (SB 12) is a Texas law requiring public schools and open-enrollment charter schools to obtain annual parental consent before providing routine physical or mental health services, including first aid, counseling, and health screenings. Schools must also notify parents of any changes to health services.

What is TCHATT?

TCHATT provides short-term school-based access to telemedicine and telehealth visits with a mental health professional for children and youth identified by school personnel. The role of TCHATT is to provide initial intervention and assessment of students and referral if needed. With TCHATT, school personnel can consult with mental health providers including psychiatrists, psychologists, and licensed clinical social workers. With an early intervention component, TCHATT offers psychoeducation for students, families, and school personnel.

School counselors plan, organize, implement, manage, and evaluate their school counseling program to increase efficiency and efficacy.  In addition, school counselors coordinate with providers in the broad network of interrelated services offered in the school, district, and community to ensure individual student needs are met.

Mission Statement

The SBCISD After School Program is an extension of the school day that enhances student's success by improving attendance, behavior, social skills and academics.

The goal of the After School Program is to extend learning opportunities outside of the regular school day to improve educational outcomes in academic performance, attendance, positive behavior, grade promotion and graduation rates. Funded by federal, state, and local funds, we will provide services for students at San Benito CISD campuses during the  school year.
