Dear Parents/”Estimados Padres”:

WELCOME TO SAN BENITO VETERANS MEMORIAL ACADEMY!

We are pleased that you have joined us for our Fall Meet the Teachers Open House. We hope that you enjoy the visit and will continue to join us in future activities. The doors of this school are always open to you. You will find that our facilities are exceptional, and you will notice that we are building an additional state of the art academic building.

We believe that parental involvement is crucial in securing and ensuring a total quality education. Partner up with our teachers to help us take this school and your child to a world class level.

Tonight is about meeting the teachers. Ask the teachers if a parent/teacher/student conference is needed. Set up the conference with the teachers. Continue to monitor your child’s academic progress throughout the year.

Students must earn 6 state credits to be promoted to San Benito High School and to be classified sophomores. We hold tutorials in the mornings, at lunch, and after school.

Ask the teachers about the homework clinics and Saturday Academies.

Know that we have a zero tolerance for drugs, violence (fighting), weapons, and gangs.

We appreciate your support in ensuring that we continue to be a safe school where student learning is valued. We expect our staff, faculty, and students to dress for success. We are very proud of the quality of teachers at VMA, and honored to have an awesome class of learners. We expect that every student will continue their educations and graduate college and workforce ready in May 2013. Let us continue to expect greatness to achieve greatness! We must continue to encourage our future leaders to do their very, very, very best!

We work off the two main pillars of character – respect and responsibility. Please reinforce these character traits at home and encourage your sons and/or daughters to practice respect and responsibility at school as well.

Remember this is your school too. Enjoy our Open House and thank you for all you do to assist us in affording your young ones a total quality education.

Sincerely,

Antonio Angel Rodriguez
Principal

Help Your Child Prepare Succeed in Ninth Grade

Your child’s grades appear on official transcripts/academic records starting this year (ninth grade). This records are very important and will define success in high school, determine meeting graduation requirements, and be used for admission to college. If your child has particularly strong academic interests, encourage him/her, but do not lose focus on strengthening areas of weakness that need to be addressed, especially English, Reading, and Algebra.

Your child is on a Personal Graduation Plan tailored to his/her career path. The courses on his career path will serve as prerequisites for college. Meet with your child and his/her counselor to discuss a comprehensive academic program and extracurricular activities. Encourage your child to become involved in meaningful activities in and out of school. Ensure that your child begins to contribute to community and campus through service learning, which is something that colleges look for as they consider acceptance. A well rounded student is what universities look for.

Get Involved
The initial month of high school can be a difficult adjustment both socially and academically. Visit with your child and his teachers after each grade reporting period. If your child is struggling, your child needs assistance sooner than later.
If your child needs more challenge, then perhaps a Pre-AP class is in order. Academic Rigor is also important in preparing for college.

Warehouse the Praise
Help your child begin keeping an activities and awards record, scrapbook, or bag. Include, therein, awards, leadership positions, service learning contributions, and other accomplishments earned. Help your child begin a resume for admission to college. Begin exploring colleges that are a fit to your child’s interests and career goals.

Provide support
Have regular conversations with your child about his or her academic progress. Grades should be up to par (80’s& 90”s) or higher and courses developmentally appropriate. If not, ensure your child is taking advantage of tutorials, homework clinics, academies, improving study habits, or creating a better learning/studying environment. Be a motivator. Develop an improvement plan with your child. Encourage your child and praise both successes and effort.
