In the LEGO NXT (3rd-5th grade) camp, the students learn and work for about two weeks where they develop and hone the skills required to build quite complex robots and program the robot’s behaviors.  Light, touch, ultrasonic, and sound sensors are used to give the robot input from its environment.  Student challenges usually require some sort of semi-autonomous behavior on the robot’s part to navigate obstacles and react to stimuli from the robot’s environment.  This requires top notch problem solving skills as well as creative and critical thinking. Students will create, evaluate, and synthesize robot designs and programs.

1. Requires safety training for all coaches or sponsors for athletic activities, and any marching band director.
2. Mandates that schools, at least once per year, conduct a safety drill that incorporates the training described in the safety training program developed by UIL.
3. Requires that student athletes be provided training in recognizing symptoms of catastrophic injuries, including head and neck injuries, concussions, asthma attacks, heatstroke, cardiac arrest and injuries requiring use of an AED, the risks of using nutritional supplements. This training can be conducted by the school, using the materials available on the SB 82 portion of the Health and Safety Section of the UIL web site.
4. Mandates that unsafe athletic activities are prohibited and schools must make sure that safety precautions are required.
5. Requires that any student who is rendered unconscious while participating (in practice or game) cannot participate further in that practice or game any more and must get written clearance prior to any further participation.
6. Mandates that records of compliance with the requirements of the legislation be kept and be made public upon request.
7. Requires that non-compliance with the provisions of the bill could subject the school to penalties as outlined in section 27 and 29 of the Constitution and Contest Rules.
8. Mandates that the Texas Education Agency create hotline number and email address for reports of non-compliance and schools must post that information in their administration offices. To report complaints or violations, contact the Health and Safety Division of the Texas Education Agency at 512-463-3070 or healthandsafety@tea.state.tx.us.
9. Requires the text of sections of bill as well as the Parent Information Manual must be provided to parents of participants. The bill does allow that the required materials can be provided electronically, unless specifically requested otherwise.

Registration will begin Monday, May 20, 2013 at the San Benito High School Gymnasium Office. If you should have any questions, please call 361-6455. Camp will have a maximum of 150 participants. 1st 50 participants will receive $5.00 off of the registration fees. Registration is limited to first come, first serve.

We realize that parents, students and staff may feel anxious in light of the recent incident in Connecticut. We want to reassure our parents, students and staff members that all of our principals and key department heads are joining forces to continue their efforts in making our schools a safe and nurturing environment.

Please be advised that our district has always taken a proactive approach when it comes to the safety and security of all of our campuses.  With this said, I want to inform our parents, our students, our staff and our community members that we have the following safety and security measures in place:

•police officers assigned to secondary campuses;
•security guards on duty;
•canines;
•video surveillance systems at all campuses;
•Dispatcher(s) on duty who monitors all of the schools through the district’s centralized surveillance headquarters, with monitoring of interior/exterior buildings taking place daily;
•video surveillance systems on school buses;
•Blackboard Connect messaging system for parents, students, staff, community to reach our community in minutes if it’s a time-sensitive situation, event outreach, or attendance notification;
•schools practice routine lock-down and fire drill procedures;
•safety measures such as locking/securing doors, etc. have been in place for several years;
•a safety audit was conducted a few years ago, with recommendations implemented at the campus/district level;
•hand-held metal detectors (used on an as-needed basis);
•inservice training for school personnel;
•school personnel required to wear school identification;
•mandatory check-in of all visitors;
•Raptor Trace equipment used for screening all visitors;
•Emergency Flip Chart (Quick Reference Guide) used by personnel during crisis; and
•School personnel are always vigilant of suspicious individuals.

Parents are being advised that counseling services are being made available at the campuses to address individual concerns.  Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s campus.

Esfuerzos implementados para mantener un ambiente seguro en Distrito Escolar de San Benito CISD

Estamos consientes que los padres, estudiantes y personal pueden sentirse ansiosos debido al reciente incidente en Connecticut. Queremos asegurar a nuestros padres, estudiantes y miembros del personal que todos de nuestros directores de escuelas y directores de departamentos clave se están uniendo en continuar sus esfuerzos en hacer nuestras escuelas ambientes seguros y cuidadosos.

Por favor, tomen en cuenta que nuestro distrito siempre ha tomado una actitud proactiva con respecto a la seguridad de todas nuestras escuelas. Con esto dicho, quiero informarle a nuestros padres, estudiantes, personal y miembros de la comunidad que tenemos implementadas las siguientes medidas de seguridad:

• oficiales de policía asignados a escuelas secundarias;
• guardias de seguridad en servicio;
• perros policía;
• sistemas de vigilancia por video en todas las escuelas;

• el personal de las escuelas siempre está vigilante de individuos sospechosos.
