Greyhound track to be open to public during evening hours

Beginning on Monday, July 23, and through Thursday, August 23, the Greyhound stadium track, located at the corner of North Bonham and East Hicks streets, will be available for public use Mondays through Thursdays from 4:00 to 9:00 PM.

The Greyhound stadium track has been available for public use during the morning hours of 7:30 to 10:00 AM – Monday thru Friday during the school year and Monday thru Thursday during the summer.

According to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nate Carman, the community recently reached out to trustees and district administrators regarding the possibility of opening the track for outdoor and evening physical fitness activities, such as walking and jogging.

“As San Benito CISD works to become the Gold Standard in all areas of public education, we realize positive relationships with the community are essential.  In an effort to meet the reasonable requests of several community members, evening hours have been made available,” affirms Dr. Carman.

“This is an opportunity to empower our community to become more active.  It’s a known fact that physical activity offers substantial health benefits for people of all ages.  In children alone, physical activity improves concentration, attention, and reasoning ability,” explains Trustee Orlando López.

The availability of the Greyhound stadium track for public use during evening hours had been previously suspended due to an increase in incidents of vandalism, damages to the premises, and the overall misuse of the facilities.  District administrators are currently considering the feasibility of keeping the track open on a more permanent basis.

The community is encouraged to help keep the area free of damages, clean and in good order by using trash receptacles if necessary, and not allowing dogs or other pets on the track.
