ED DOWNS SCHOOL CLASSES CONDUCTED AS BUILDERS WORK -
To the eight classrooms full of San Benito kids attending the new Ed Downs ward school this fall, it's almost like having classes out-doors. Wide doors of each classroom, facing open air hallways, are opened, and windows make up most of classroom wall surfaces.
Construction was still being mixed with education Friday, but the chaos at least was organized, as the construction company hammered and chiseled at the administration and classroom-cafeteria buildings and teachers went on with their classes inside.
In the cafeteria, the school band was playing the Marines' Hymn, as only a beginning band can. Next door the fourth grade sang the Cassons Go rolling Along. Classes in the five-room west building of the school by now are reasonably organized.
Bag lunches for Ed Downs students and teachers are being sent over from the High cafeteria. The first unit of the new school was to have been finished Septermber 1, 1950 but shortages and shipping delays postponed the opening while North Ward handled the overflow.
