Asthma, a chronic lung condition that affects an estimated 6.3 million U.S. children under 18, can be life-threatening if not properly managed.
 
Symptoms

  • Wheezing
  • Sensation of being starved for air
Triggers
  • Allergens: Dust mites, pollen, molds, pets, foods, medicines
  • Irritants: Tobacco or other smoke, fumes from household sprays, paint
  • Colds, flu
  • Exercise, strenuous activity
Management
  • Use observation, allergy tests to find out which triggers affect your child; lessen or avoid exposure to them
  • Take medications, as prescribed
  • Some doctors recommend allergy shots, immunotherapy or desensitization to reduce sensitivity to triggers
What causes asthma?
  • Hyperactive response of bronchial tubes to certain triggers
