Controlling Asthma
Asthma, a chronic lung condition that affects an estimated 6.3 million
U.S. children under 18, can be life-threatening if not properly managed.
Symptoms
- Wheezing
- Sensation of being starved for air
Triggers
- Allergens: Dust mites, pollen, molds, pets, foods,
medicines
- Irritants: Tobacco or other smoke, fumes from household
sprays, paint
- Colds, flu
- Exercise, strenuous activity
Management
- Use observation, allergy tests to find out which triggers affect your
child; lessen or avoid exposure to them
- Take medications, as prescribed
- Some doctors recommend allergy shots, immunotherapy or desensitization
to reduce sensitivity to triggers
What causes asthma?
- Hyperactive response of bronchial tubes to certain triggers
