Fred Booth, Joe Callandret PRC and Landrum to host celebrations in January

SAN BENITO - Three San Benito CISD schools will be hosting their Centennial Celebrations this later month according to the following schedule:

Fred Booth Elementary – Monday, January 26 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Joe Callandret Positive Redirection Center – Thursday, January 29 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Landrum Elementary – Thursday, January 29 from 6-7:30 p.m.

The district recently held its kick-off reception to officially begin the festivities.  The schools in the district will continue to observe the celebration beginning in January and continuing in May.  A districtwide celebration featuring all schools, including performances and entertainment, is set for Friday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Bobby Morrow Stadium.

“The district will officially turn 100 years old on April 17.  We are excited about the celebration and festivities scheduled throughout the next few months,” said Celia Longoria, the district’s Director of Communications and Marketing.

Photos of the schools obtained by the district’s Community Relations Department, the Business Office and the San Benito Historical Society are featured in a video produced by KSBG-TV 17, which is currently airing.

Longoria and members of the Centennial Advisory Committee have been working diligently for the past few months, meeting on a monthly basis in preparation for the upcoming events.  The committee is comprised of La Paloma Elementary Principal Cecilia Rangel, Berta Cabaza Middle School teacher and San Benito Historical Society member Sandra Tumberlinson, Community Relations secretary Priscilla Garcia and trustees Bob Tumberlinson and Vice-President Oscar Medrano.

Fred Booth

At Fred Booth Elementary, Principal Manuel Cruz announced that members of the Fred Booth family would be in attendance at the school’s celebration.  The school will have a custom-made banner showing the original school as the back-drop which will serve as a focal point on the stage.  The school plans on having a display of antique desks and memorabilia.  Choir students have been busy learning the old school song, according to Cruz.

Joe Callandret PRC

Principal Ray Saldaña said students and staff members are excited about hosting their celebration.  Saldaña has extended an invitation to members of the Joe Callandret family and they have indicated that they will be in attendance.

Saldaña said Brenda Griffin, a teacher at Riverside Middle School, will be joined by a group on the evening of the school’s celebration to provide entertainment.

“In commemorating the 100th anniversary of the San Benito CISD, we, the student body, faculty, staff and administration would like to thank all those who have contributed to this milestone,” Saldaña said.

The school will highlight student/community-oriented projects and will have a photo collage on display.  A tour of the campus and classroom visits will be conducted, Saldaña said.

Landrum Elementary

At Landrum Elementary, Principal Theresa Servellon, counselor Sylvia C. Garcia and staff members are busy preparing for the event.  Choir students will be singing old school songs. Several classes will be performing dances from different eras, such as the Charleston, which was popular in the 1920's.  The school plans on presenting a slideshow depicting Landrum’s history, including photos of James L. Landrum.  Fifth grade students will provide a guided tour of the school.  The campus has extended an invitation to members of the Landrum family, including the district’s own Director of Child Nutrition Program Jana Landrum. She is James L. Landrum’s granddaughter.

Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón encourages community members to attend the celebrations.

“The events that the schools will be hosting are open to the public.  We encourage community members to visit the campuses during this time and partake in the celebrations,” Limón said.  “This is an opportunity to showcase our schools, our students and our staff members.  This will also give our community an opportunity to see our beautiful facilities and witness the technological advances being made available to both students and staff.”
